SCHOOL TAXES
In the meantime, we wanted to provide the information presented regarding school taxes as you should have received your tax bill by now.
Your current tax bill represents decisions by the School Board in May 2025 and May 2026. In 2025, the school board passed, on a 5-4 vote, a budget that raised school taxes $11 million. This was a 40% increase. No budget cuts were made and this amount was $3 million more than the State budgeting formula dictated.
This tax increase is split by the City between the 2025 and 2026 tax years; therefore, this decision n 2025 involved a $5.5 million tax increase on your 2025 tax bill and a $5.5 million tax increase on your 2026 tax bill.
In May, 2026, the School Board balanced the 2026-27 budget by primarily making over $10 million in budget reductions and a 2% tax increase. This decision resulted in a $380,000 tax increase for 2026 and a $380,000 tax increase for 2027.
This 2026 decision involved an independent analysis of the staffing and scheduling of all personnel in the District as well as evaluating a reduction in spending across all areas.
Currently, the School Board has sought an independent analysis of all buildings and grounds to determine the need for each and if a more efficient and effective use of building and grounds can lead to further savings for this year and future years. The analysis will be completed this month.
WILL THERE BE A HUGE TAX INCREASE IN 2027?
No specific predictions about future taxes can be made. However, as mentioned above, all school tax decisions affect the current year and the next year. The 2026 tax increase will increase next year’s 2027 taxes by $380,000. Compare this to the 2025 tax increase that resulted in a $5.5 million tax increase this year.
